Privacy and cookies
Last updated 28 October 2026. This explains what personal information Fell & Folio collects, why, and your rights. We keep it short and plain.
Who we are
Fell & Folio (fellandfolio.co.uk) is an independent visitor guide to Sedbergh and the Howgill Fells. The person responsible for your personal information (the “data controller”) is Alex Barratt. Contact us at hello@fellandfolio.co.uk.
What we collect, and why
- Emails you send us. If you write to hello@fellandfolio.co.uk or listings@fellandfolio.co.uk, we receive your email address, name if you give it, and what you write. We use it to reply and, for business enquiries, to discuss listings. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests (answering you) or taking steps you ask for before a contract.
- Technical data when you visit. Like any website, our hosting provider’s servers record your IP address, browser type and the pages requested in server logs. This is used for security and to keep the site running (legitimate interests).
- Newsletter. We do not currently run a newsletter or collect email addresses through the site. If that changes we will ask for your consent first and update this page.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it to make automated decisions about you.
Cookies and similar technologies
We do not set any cookies ourselves, and we do not currently use analytics or advertising trackers. If we add analytics later, we will say so here and, where the law requires, ask for your consent first.
Third parties your browser contacts
Some features load content from other organisations. When that happens your IP address and browser details are sent to them, and they may set their own cookies under their own policies.
- Map pages. The route maps load the Leaflet map library from Cloudflare (cdnjs.cloudflare.com) and map tiles from OpenTopoMap and OpenStreetMap contributors.
- Links you choose to click. “Directions to start” opens Google Maps, and “Open in OpenStreetMap” opens OpenStreetMap. We send them only the coordinates of the walk’s start point, not anything about you.
- Affiliate and partner links. Some outbound links (for example to cottage or holiday providers) may be affiliate links. If you click one, the provider and any affiliate network may set cookies to credit us. This costs you nothing extra, and these links are marked.
- Hosting and email providers process data on our behalf to run the site and our mailboxes.
How long we keep it
Emails are kept only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and a reasonable period afterwards (normally no more than 24 months after the last contact), unless we need to keep a record of a business arrangement. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for a short period according to its own retention settings.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to: tell you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict or stop our use of it, or give you a copy. You can also object to processing based on legitimate interests. To do any of these, email hello@fellandfolio.co.uk.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
Children
The site is a general visitor guide and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes
We may update this page, for example if we add a newsletter or analytics. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
